Should You Plugin Your Laptop While It Is Fully Charged? Or Should You Not?

One of the major reasons why a lot of people prefer to opt for a laptop is the convenience it offers thanks to its portability. You can carry it anywhere without worrying about a power source. And while there are a lot of factors that need to be considered while buying a laptop, like a laptop price, processor, whether or not you want a touch screen laptop, and so on, the most important factor to consider is the battery backup. The more the battery backup, the longer your laptop will run without the need to charge it. These days, you see a lot of people using laptops in office spaces, and if you notice, more than 90% of people have their laptops plugged in at all times. The ongoing debate between a lot of people is whether you should plug in your laptop while it is fully charged or not? The answer to this question isn’t exactly that simple. There are multiple opinions and factors that you need to understand first.

It Is Important To Understand The Battery First

Irrespective of the laptop brand and laptop price, there are two main types of batteries you will find in every laptop. Lithium-ion batteries and lithium-polymer batteries. Despite using different technologies, their function is to generate power through the movements of electrons. There are two things about these batteries that you need to keep in mind.

● A battery cannot be overcharged

Once you fully charge a battery it will stop charging unless it drops down to a certain level.

● Fully discharging a battery will damage it

If you allow the battery to discharge completely, it may damage it and you may never be able to charge again.

Things That Damage Batteries

Charge and discharge cycle

There is only a certain number of times you can recharge the battery.

Voltage level

Higher the voltage level, the shorter the battery life.

Heat

Excess heat damages your battery and shortens its life. And when you combine voltage issues and heat, the results are even worse. Try using a laptop case to protect it from excess heat.

Some laptops even allow you to remove the batteries if you don’t intend to charge them and continue using the laptop with the help of the power source. This advice differs based on the brand you choose.

So Should You Keep Your Laptop Plugged In?

Constantly keeping your laptop plugged in ruins the battery, but so does charging it every day. We know it is complicated, but hear us out. There is no straight answer to whether you should use your laptop on AC or battery power. Keeping your laptop plugged in constantly will not have any short-term damage. But over time, it will significantly reduce your battery’s capacity. Similarly, if you only utilize the laptop’s battery power, you will deplete the battery’s discharge cycle quicker.

The best solution to this is finding a balance between the two. Use it on battery power for a couple of days, and plug it in the rest of the days. Just make sure your laptop does not too hot.
